Andrew Jackson was an American statesman. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 7th President of the United States, having served from March 4, 1829 to March 4, 1837. He was elected to the position in 1828 and 1832. He was also a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Tennessee, from December 4, 1796 to September 26, 1797, a United States Senator from Tennessee, from September 26, 1797 to April 1, 1798, and again from March 4, 1823 to October 14, 1825, and a Military Governor of Florida, from March 10, 1821 to December 31, 1821.
He was also a Democratic-Republican Party candidate for President of the United States in 1824, when he won a plurality of the popular vote.
President Jackson was the son of Elizabeth (Hutchinson) and Andrew Jackson. His parents were from Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Ireland, now Northern Ireland. They also had recent English ancestry. President Jackson also had remote Welsh and French roots. All eight of President Jackson’s great-grandparents were born outside of the United States, a rarity among American Presidents.
He was married to Rachel (Donelson) Jackson. He had three adopted children, including two who were Native American.
President Jackson’s patrilineal line can be traced to Anthony Jackson, who was born, c. 1578, in Killingswood Grove, Yorkshire, England.
President Jackson’s paternal grandfather was Hugh Jackson (the son of Thomas Jackson and Isabella Thompson). Hugh was born in Carrickfergus, Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. Thomas was the son of John Jackson and Katherine McKinley. He was from Ballyregan, Dundonald, County Down, Ireland.
President Jackson’s paternal grandmother was named Elizabeth Creath.
President Jackson’s maternal grandfather was Francis Cyrus Hobart Hutchinson (the son of John Hutchinson and Mary Hobart). Francis was born in Owthorpe, Nottinghamshire, England, to a father from Owthorpe and a mother from Antrim, Ireland. John was the son of John Hutchinson and Lucy Apsley.
President Jackson’s maternal grandmother likely was Leslie Hutchinson. Leslie was from Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Ireland.
